Matt Breida Retires from NFL at 30

NFL running backs typically have a shorter career span compared to players in other positions, largely due to the physical demands faced by ball carriers. It’s not uncommon for them to start declining around the age of 30.

This year, Matt Breida, who just turned 30, opted to retire just weeks before the NFL’s regular season kicked off.

Breida’s last team was the New York Giants, but he began his professional journey with the San Francisco 49ers. Interestingly, he made a return to the Niners in 2024, even spending some time during the preseason with them. Over his seven-year career, he also played for the Miami Dolphins and the Buffalo Bills.

As reported by ESPN, Breida decided to step away from football altogether, choosing to decline an offer to train with the Dolphins as he returned to South Florida.

He went undrafted in 2017 after playing at Georgia Southern University.

Breida carved out a significant role with the Niners in 2018, ultimately recording a career-high of 814 rushing yards that season. Throughout his two seasons with the Giants, he participated in 34 games.

In total, Breida concludes his NFL career with 2,652 rushing yards and 19 rushing touchdowns.

On another note, the Dallas Cowboys are scheduled to face the reigning champion Philadelphia Eagles on September 4 to kick off the 2025 season.
