Terry Moran Leaves ABC News for Substack
Former ABC News correspondent Terry Moran shared on Wednesday that he has transitioned to Substack after his exit from the network, largely due to his critical comments about President Donald Trump and Stephen Miller made on social media.
“For nearly 28 years, I served as a reporter and anchor at ABC News. You might have heard of it. Well, I’m not with them anymore. I’m here now, in this fascinating space, and I’m eager to connect,” Moran stated in his announcement.
After joining ABC in 1997, Moran deleted several posts aimed at Trump and Miller early on Sunday, leading to ABC News taking action against him.
Substack has attracted various journalists departing from traditional media outlets, including Jim Acosta and Chris Cillizza, particularly those from CNN.
Moran faced backlash for his comments. He claimed on social media, “What’s more about Stephen Miller isn’t that he’s the architect of Trumpism.” These remarks drew responses from White House press secretary Caroline Leavitt.
ABC News confirmed on Tuesday that Moran’s contract would not be renewed following the incident. His contract was set to expire this week. An ABC News representative said, “Our agreement with Terry Moran is ending, and his recent posts clearly violated our policy, leading to this decision.”
The spokesperson emphasized that the network maintains high standards for objectivity, fairness, and professionalism, reaffirming their commitment to reliable journalism.
Staff members at ABC News expressed disappointment regarding Moran’s comments, with reactions indicating surprise at his situation. One employee shared, “Nobody agrees with the decision to suspend him. It’s been shocking for everyone… simply terrible.”
Journalists at ABC believed they maintained a constructive relationship with the administration. Many felt Moran’s previous experience interviewing Trump—like recording his first 100 days—illustrated that relationship.
“People here genuinely like Terry. I want to be clear about that. I don’t believe he’s a bad person, but this was a really poor judgment call when our credibility is at stake,” stated a staff member, noting the ongoing struggle for trust in journalism.
Earlier in April, Trump criticized ABC and Moran during an interview, mentioning, “They’re giving you a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I chose you, although frankly, I’ve never heard of you.”
