Former Angels pitcher Scot Shields fooled by his daughter

Ella Shields, daughter of former Angels pitcher Scott Shields, has turned her father’s MLB past into a viral comedy sketch.

The Grand Valley State University junior pulled a prank on her dad, who is a retired baseball player, by pretending to analyze the stats of a college pitcher her friend liked. Instead, she casually recited Scott’s own impressive career statistics, acting as if she didn’t know the meaning of terms like ERA and WHIP. The clip has racked up nearly 8.8 million views.

During the call, she said, “His ERA is 3.18,” and then posed the question, “What does WHIP mean?” Scott patiently broke it down for her. Once Ella revealed that the stats were actually his own, Scott was momentarily taken aback and then realized, almost in disbelief, that he had been discussing his own numbers.

“Are those my stats?” he asked, admitting they were “pretty good.”

This little moment fits right into the ongoing social media trend they have. Scott, who spent ten years with the Angels and was a part of their 2002 World Series win, often pops up in Ella’s TikTok videos.

He has been featured in clips where she jokes about his athletic skills and showcases his World Series ring.

After retiring, having had quite the successful career with a remarkable 1.24 ERA and 631 WHIP, Scott found a new role as a surprisingly enthusiastic TikTok co-star alongside Ella, who focuses her content on a blend of college experiences, fashion, friends, and even snippets from when she was a standout high school volleyball player.

Meanwhile, the Grand Valley Lakers baseball team had an impressive season with a record of 48-10, dominating the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference standings in 2026.
