Former Biden Official Interviews with House Investigators

A former official from the Biden administration, Ronald Crane, appeared before House investigators on Thursday. Crane, who served as Chief of Staff to President Joe Biden from January 2021 until February 2023, was expected to engage with the House Oversight Committee in a closed session for a voluntary transcribed interview.

Committee Chairman James Comer, a Republican from Kentucky, is looking into whether Biden’s senior aides concealed indications of the president’s declining mental capacity. Interestingly, Biden recently claimed in an interview that he “made all the decisions.”

Crane marks the sixth former White House official to participate in this investigation, and he’s among the few to do so voluntarily. Previous officials, like former White House doctor Kevin O’Connor, and advisors Annie Tomasini and Anthony Bernal, came in under subpoena and invoked the Fifth Amendment during their testimonies.

Neela Tanden, who was a staff secretary, and long-time Biden advisor Ashley Williams also participated in lengthy transcribed interviews. Those discussions lasted over four hours, and it seems that investigators are piecing together new bits of information. It’s worth noting that prior to his role as Chief of Staff, Crane had also served in the same capacity during the Obama administration when Biden was vice president, in addition to being a top advisor on Biden’s 2020 presidential campaign.

One point of interest for the Committee is Crane’s notable involvement in prepping Biden for the 2024 debate against current President Donald Trump.

Representative Eric Burlison, a member of the Oversight Committee from Missouri, shared some queries he hoped to address during Crane’s interview, particularly regarding the president’s cognitive abilities and decision-making context.
