Former Biden aide Bates criticizes House GOP's investigation into Biden during Oversight Committee testimony.

Andrew Bates, a former senior vice president under President Biden, recently took a firm stance against the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee during his opening statement. This committee has been investigating Biden, and Bates was one of several former aides who attended the session to address questions about the president’s mental acuity and the use of an autopen.

Speaking as a spontaneous witness, Bates criticized the panel, pointing out that Republican lawmakers are spending taxpayer money on inquiries into Biden while ignoring serious allegations against current officials. He stated, “As illegal tariffs rise, the president is profiting at the expense of the American people, providing special access to his supporters.”

Bates highlighted various issues, including Trump’s jet received from Qatar, the pardoning of January 6th rioters who assaulted police officers, and the transfer of Ghislaine Maxwell to a less secure facility, suggesting these incidents have gone unexamined by the committee. “I feel it’s wrong as a taxpayer and citizen,” he added.

He also expressed concern over the GOP’s decision to add $3.4 trillion to the national debt through what he called the “large and beautiful bill,” stressing that the Congressional Budget Office indicated this would worsen the deficit while taxpayer funds are being directed towards scrutinizing Biden.

Bates echoed sentiments shared by fellow former aides, asserting that Biden is “in charge” even as the committee investigates his cognitive abilities during his presidency. Bates remarked that Biden ultimately decided to not pursue reelection under pressure from Democrats who doubted his debate performances, noting moments of confusion and difficulties in articulating thoughts.

“There was a clear understanding in the White House that Joe Biden was in charge, which aligns with my own experiences working alongside him,” Bates stated.

He arrived at the committee around 10 a.m. and did not engage with reporters during his time there. Bates’s testimony largely centered on criticizing the GOP’s investigation and Trump’s actions, a departure from previous statements made by his colleagues.

Ian Sams, another former aide, voluntarily provided a transcribed interview last month. Following this, committee chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) mentioned that Sams communicated with Biden twice, even during press briefings about the president.

Anita Dunn, a close advisor to Biden, relayed to the committee that the president made his own decisions. She characterized certain staff interactions as lacking mental skill regarding the president’s capabilities, and clarified that senior aides weren’t behind the use of autopen for key documents.

Meanwhile, Steve Richetti, a former senior advisor to Biden, assured legislators that the former president “will be able to fully fulfill his duties.” Other members of Biden’s team, such as Bruce Reed and Mike Donilon, also testified, although one former aide was compelled to appear after initially refusing to cooperate.
