Former Biden Aide Invokes Fifth Amendment
Annie Tomasini, a former aide to President Joe Biden, recently invoked the Fifth Amendment during a GOP-led investigation into the president’s cognitive health, marking her as the third former staff member to dodge testimony on this matter.
On Friday, House Oversight Chairman James Comer announced that Tomasini exercised her right against self-incrimination, declining to disclose whether the White House had instructed her to provide misleading information regarding Biden’s health.
“There’s a pattern of friends of Biden attempting to shield themselves from potential legal issues concerning this alleged conspiracy,” Comer claimed.
She also invoked the Fifth Amendment when questioned about whether she had ever advised Biden to conceal or destroy sensitive materials found at his home or office. There were also inquiries about possible collaborations with others in the White House to suppress information regarding the Biden family’s activities.
“It seems they’re more concerned with protecting themselves and Biden rather than being honest with the American public about this ongoing scandal,” she remarked.
Tomasini’s reluctance follows that of Anthony Bernal, another former Biden aide, who also invoked the Fifth Amendment last week. His involvement came to light following statements from Biden’s doctor during the president’s last term.
“I think it’s promising that we might inquire about involving a family member,” Comer noted, while also indicating that interviewing Biden may still be considered.
Tomasini began her career as a reporter’s assistant to then-Senator Biden in the 2000s, where she earned a reputation while he chaired the Foreign Relations Committee.
Initially, she had agreed to testify before the oversight panel but changed her stance earlier this week. Her attorney subsequently asked for a subpoena to compel her appearance.
Comer is currently probing alleged “original sins” involving the Biden administration, highlighted by reporting from journalists Jake Tupper and Alex Thompson.
In their findings, they proposed that certain key advisors, Tomasini included, played a significant role in decisions during Biden’s earlier administration as his mental acuity appeared to decline.
Other former officials scheduled to appear for questioning before the oversight panel include former White House Chief of Staff and various senior advisors, with interviews planned through late July and early August.
