Richetti Testifies on Biden’s Capabilities

In Washington, former President Joe Biden’s ex-aide, Steve Richetti, testified before the House Oversight Committee, asserting that Biden is “fully capable” of fulfilling his duties and that nobody would interfere with his authority. Richetti, 68, a longtime ally of Biden, spoke for about eight and a half hours on Wednesday as part of an investigation into Biden’s mental acuity and the use of an autopen during his presidency.

“Let me be clear. I have always believed President Biden can carry out his responsibilities,” Richetti declared. He emphasized that neither he nor anyone else has undermined Biden’s constitutional obligations. “Sure, there may have been stumbles or mistakes, but that doesn’t diminish his capability.”

Richetti is the seventh individual from Biden’s close circle to testify, determined to counter the “false narrative” surrounding Biden’s capacity to fulfill his constitutional roles.

Having served as Biden’s chief of staff during his vice presidency and as a chief advisor during the Clinton administration, Richetti played a significant role in advancing Biden’s legislative agenda over the past four years.

In the book “Original Sin,” Richetti is described as part of Biden’s inner circle, often referred to as the “politics” group, and recognized as a key decision-maker for the president. At one point, he personally reached out to a reporter to refute claims regarding Biden’s condition.

Interestingly, Richetti was reportedly upset after actor George Clooney made comments about Biden last July, reacting strongly to what he perceived as misinformation.

Back in May, James Comer, chairman of the Oversight Committee, had initiated requests for testimonies from former Biden aides to explore the roles they might have played in the use of the autopen, focusing on any efforts to obscure Biden’s mental fitness.

Summoned to provide clarity on these matters, Richetti used his testimony to criticize the investigations, suggesting it was part of a broader coordinated effort by the administration and its allies to undermine Biden’s record.

“I’m not aware of any attempts to use an autopen on important documents without the President’s knowledge or consent,” Richetti said in his opening remarks. He maintained that senior staff kept the president fully informed and involved in key decisions.

Biden responded with a statement asserting his involvement in critical decisions, including pardons and executive orders, rejecting any suggestions to the contrary as “ridiculous and false.”

In response to Richetti’s testimony, Comer expressed skepticism, suggesting that Richetti’s account didn’t align with other testimonies presented to the committee. He noted that some former officials had chosen to invoke their Fifth Amendment rights, creating inconsistencies in the testimonies.

Comer stated, “We’re piecing everything together, releasing transcripts, and preparing a report. Ultimately, we hope to clarify who has been using the autopen and under what circumstances.”

The investigations concerning Biden’s autopen usage are part of a broader inquiry led by the Trump administration’s oversight committee, examining how such practices were managed during his presidency. Several other aides have also appeared before this investigation, though some have opted not to answer questions.

The committee is expected to hear from additional former senior advisors in the coming days.
