Bruce Reid Testifies Before Congressional Investigators
Bruce Reid, a former Deputy Chief of Staff for the White House, met with Congressional investigators who are looking into whether there are indications of mental decline from the former president. Reid arrived just before 10 a.m. on Tuesday and did not address the reporters ahead of his interview with the House Oversight Committee.
This investigation sees Reid as the ninth former official from the White House to participate, with several appearing on their own accord.
Investigation Focused on Biden’s Mental Fitness
Chairman of the House Oversight Committee, James Comer from Kentucky, is probing accusations that Joe Biden’s close associates may be concealing signs of his mental decline. The investigators are particularly interested in the numerous significant orders signed toward the end of Biden’s presidency, raising questions of whether an autopen signature was employed without his complete knowledge.
Despite these allegations, Biden and his supporters have refuted claims of any wrongdoing, with Biden asserting that he was fully responsible for decisions made regarding pardons.
Reid has a long-standing history with Biden, having served as his chief of staff during the Obama administration between January 2011 to December 2013, and his relationship with Biden has persisted over years.
Unclear Results from Reid’s Testimony
While Reid’s testimony may not yield definitive evidence, past allies of Biden who have voluntarily appeared have diverged in their beliefs about the former president’s mental acuity. Some, like Ron Crane, have acknowledged that Biden’s memory seems to be waning. In contrast, others like Steve Richetti argue that Biden remains as sharp as ever.
Those who were compelled to appear have largely claimed their Fifth Amendment rights to avoid substantive queries.
Future Testimonies Expected
Reid was noted as being part of Biden’s close circle, often described as part of a decision-making group at the close of Biden’s term, according to various reports. Although the meetings can go on for hours, it’s not expected that lawmakers will conduct a transcribed interview with him. Traditionally, such sessions involve both Democratic and Republican legal representatives.
Overall, this inquiry is ongoing, and additional testimonies from former aides are anticipated in the weeks ahead.
