Former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales told Julie Mason that he thinks it's unlikely that former President George W. Bush would endorse Vice President Harris. Bush, who served as president during Gonzales' tenure, announced last week that he would not publicly endorse any candidate in the 2024 presidential election.
“That's totally at odds with his character and what I know about him,” Gonzalez told Mason on SiriusXM.
But he believes Bush may personally feel differently.
“That doesn't mean that Trump doesn't think this is an unusual situation, or that he thinks speaking out might be helpful,” Gonzalez said. “I think he's going to remain silent and hope that the American people will make a judgment.”
Gonzales Wrote an editorial Writing in support of Harris for Politico, he said “the character of who we elect in November matters especially today,” and that Congress has “shown a conspicuous lack of ability and willingness to check abuses of executive power.”
“Voting for Harris requires Americans to trust her character and judgment,” he wrote. “Some may see her as too progressive and worry that she will be easily manipulated. But judging by her past actions and statements, there is little mystery or doubt about how she will operate and govern.”
The endorsement followed one from former Vice President Dick Cheney for Harris, but Gonzalez said the efforts by the two Bush administration officials were uncoordinated, adding that the reaction to his endorsement had been largely positive.
“I've been surprised by the number of comments I've received,” he said. “I respect those who don't agree with what I've written, but no one I know would say that to me.”
