Jake Letzraff Transfers to Tulane
Jake Letzraff, a former BYU quarterback, has announced his verbal commitment to transfer to Tulane. This comes as he continues his college football journey following a series of personal challenges.
It seems that Tulane has been conducting background checks on Letzraff, including inquiries from their Title IX office. As of now, he’s expected to join the team as a walk-on, implying he will need to compete to secure a starting position.
Letzraff’s decision follows his withdrawal from BYU on July 11. The context here is significant: he left due to the university’s plan to revise its schedule, which included pausing seven games in response to concerns surrounding the school’s honor code.
In his own words, Letzraff shared on Instagram, “After many prayers, reflections, and conversations with people I trust, I made the difficult decision to officially withdraw from the BYU and BYU football programs.” He further expressed gratitude for the opportunities he was given, emphasizing that BYU was much more than just football for him—it was a place of personal growth, in multiple ways.
Letzraff has recently been embroiled in serious legal matters concerning allegations of sexual assault, which he has denied, asserting that the interactions were consensual. In November 2023, a woman accused him of rape, but both parties later expressed a desire to dismiss the case. A motion was filed with Salt Lake City’s 3rd District Court to formally withdraw the allegations, indicating an inability to pursue the suit further.
Notably, BYU operates under a strict honor code set by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which prohibits premarital sex. Although Letzraff isn’t part of the faith, he was still bound by these standards as a student. With a year left to play, the decision to transfer could provide him with an entire season to demonstrate his abilities before considering the NFL.
He will be joining Tulane’s squad under coach Jon Sumrall. Interestingly, Letzraff was once recruited to Troy before deciding on BYU, so there’s some familiarity, but reports suggest Sumrall has not yet made any promises regarding the starting quarterback role.
Reflecting on his previous season, Letzraff had a standout year with BYU, totaling 2,947 passing yards and 20 touchdowns, helping the team to an overall record of 11-2.
Under Sumrall’s leadership, Tulane finished its last season with a record of 9-5, and with Letzraff’s arrival, there are considerable expectations for improvement in the upcoming year.
