A former counselor at a Christian camp in Texas allegedly threatened to “create the next Columbine shooting” if he was dismissed from his position.
On Sunday, authorities took 23-year-old Mario Vernal into custody after he reportedly made threats towards a camper at Camp Cho Yo in Livingston. Witnesses informed the police about his statements.
According to reports, Vernal mentioned to onlookers that if he lost his job at the camp, he would carry out an attack reminiscent of the 1999 tragic school shooting, claiming that he could “drive himself out.”
He is also claimed to have said that if the camp pursued legal action against him, he would not back down easily.
The camp’s website describes itself as a space for individuals, both young and old, to grow in their faith and character while fostering a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ.
Vernal reportedly worked at the camp alongside his girlfriend.
In addition to the threats, he has been accused of locking children in overheated rooms as a form of discipline, leading to his firing after a colleague reported the alleged mistreatment.
The Livingston Police Department shared an update on social media, stating they located Vernal parked at the camp’s entrance.
Police Chief Matt Parrish emphasized that threats to the community, especially those involving children, are treated seriously and commended the quick response and investigation by law enforcement.
Vernal faces charges related to making terrorist threats that disrupt public services and is currently being held on a $50,000 bond.
