Chargers Move to 2-0 After Victory Over Raiders
Shaun Merriman, a former star for the Los Angeles Chargers, is making it clear that the team’s recent win against the Las Vegas Raiders, which finished 20-9, showcases their potential as serious championship contenders. In a recent chat with Fox News Digital, Merriman expressed confidence in the Chargers’ overall performance.
“If you doubt their competitiveness in the AFC—not just the West—you might want to pay closer attention,” he remarked. He highlighted Jim Harbaugh’s success with various teams and noted that Justin Herbert is now more experienced, having had continuity in coaching.
Herbert, in his first season, managed to throw for 242 yards and two touchdowns against the Raiders, benefiting from a stable coaching setup. With Harbaugh now at the helm and Greg Roman serving as offensive coordinator, the team is poised for growth.
Merriman praised the entire team dynamic, emphasizing that they no longer solely depend on Herbert to secure victories. “Now it’s a complete team. Whether Herbert plays well or not, they can still win,” he added. “Having the strongest-armed quarterback in the NFL, that’s an added advantage, but this team is tough on both sides of the ball.”
The Kansas City Chiefs, often dominant in the AFC, are facing a rough start this season, currently sitting at 0-2.
Merriman argued that the Chiefs can’t lean on Patrick Mahomes as reliably as they used to, hinting that the team needs to adapt. “You can’t expect Mahomes to carry the team forever. Even top quarterbacks, like Aaron Rodgers, faced challenges with their support staff,” he stated.
He also acknowledged Travis Kelce’s remarkable skills but noted that “he’s human too,” implying that age affects performance.
The Chargers are set to kick off their home season against the Denver Broncos this Sunday.
