The Village of Dalton, Illinois, voted Monday to hire former Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot as a “special agent” to investigate Dalton Mayor Tiffany Henyard.
Starting Tuesday, Lightfoot will be paid $400 an hour to gather information about Henyard’s alleged spending and financial mismanagement, as well as “state and federal violations.”
Ahead of Monday’s vote, Lightfoot said she understands residents want to go in a different direction than Henyard and promised to “follow the facts as they lead us.”

At the conclusion of the investigation, Lightfoot will submit a report of the findings to the Village of Dalton. The report’s findings will determine what happens next.
Trustees also voted again on issues that Mayor Dalton had previously vetoed, as well as paying vendors and bills that the village had not yet paid.

Monday’s vote was not an official village commission meeting, so it took place outside the venue in a park district building. It was also relocated there to accommodate residents who wanted to participate.
The village of Dalton, Illinois’ monthly town hall meeting made headlines again last week with a bitter confrontation with its scandal-plagued mayor.
Henyard has been accused of a variety of misdeeds, from using weapons against police in retaliatory corporate raids to spending taxpayer money on luxury items such as trips to Las Vegas. Henyard last month reportedly vetoed a board resolution to investigate his own spending for alleged misuse of his funds.

The FBI has reportedly already begun investigating Henyard on suspicion of abusing local police, but the board’s resolution called on the FBI to further investigate Henyard’s spending of town money. .
