Grand Jury Subpoenas Key Figures in Trump-Russia Investigation
A federal grand jury has issued subpoenas to former CIA Director John Brennan, along with ex-FBI agents Peter Strzok and Lisa Page, as part of the Justice Department’s probe into the origins of the Trump-Russia investigation, sources have informed.
These subpoenas were reportedly delivered to Brennan, Strzok—who was the FBI’s Deputy Director for Counterintelligence—and Page, a former FBI lawyer, on Friday.
Officials indicated that around 30 additional subpoenas might be forthcoming in the days ahead as the investigation continues.
This grand jury operates outside the Southern District of Florida, with U.S. Attorney Jason Redding Quiñones overseeing the matter.
Earlier in July, it was revealed that both Brennan and former FBI Director James Comey were subjects of investigation.
Comey has been accused of making false statements and obstructing Congress, to which he has pleaded not guilty. His trial is anticipated to start in January.
In 2018, the Justice Department’s Inspector General Michael Horowitz uncovered several anti-Trump text messages exchanged between Strzok and Page.
Both were involved in Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s team back in 2017. Page had a brief stint with Mueller’s group before returning to the FBI’s Office of General Counsel in mid-2017, while Strzok was reassigned away after being removed from the team.
Strzok was instrumental in initiating the FBI’s initial Russia investigation, dubbed “Crossfire Hurricane,” in July 2016.
In the wake of scrutiny surrounding those messages, Page resigned from the FBI in May 2018, and Strzok was eventually fired in August 2018.
Strzok testified before Congress in 2018 and acknowledged having an affair with Page.
