Former College Wrestler Accused Of Fatally Shooting Girlfriend Claims It Was ‘Self-Defense’

A former college wrestler charged with murdering his girlfriend claims he shot her in self-defense because he “feared for his life.”

According to reports, Chad Richards, 23, claims he felt threatened after a violent argument on Aug. 30, so he grabbed his girlfriend, Kara Welsh, 21,'s gun and shot her.Number.

“The defendant stated he shot (the victim) with a handgun because he feared for his life,” a recently filed criminal complaint states.

Richards claimed that Welsh had grabbed a gun from her nightstand, so he wrestled her away from the gun and shot her in self-defense.

But the lawsuit says the former wrestler fired about eight shots at Welsh while he was in the fetal position.

Whitewater police found Richards crying outside the apartment while Welsh was “lying on the floor in a pool of blood.”

Authorities later determined that Richards fired a total of 11 shots, eight of which struck Welsh in the torso and neck.

Richards is charged with first-degree intentional murder, disorderly conduct while armed and endangering safety by use of a dangerous weapon.

He is being held in the Walworth County Jail on $1 million bail.
