Federal Charges Against Former DEA Informant

Recent federal court filings reveal that a former DEA informant from Florida is facing charges for trying to extort a major cocaine trafficker. Jorge Hernandez, who is 57 years old and known by the nickname “Bowling Ball,” has spent a significant portion of his last 25 years assisting the federal government in dismantling drug operations.

Hernandez’s role as a witness emerged during a 2023 corruption trial related to the DEA. Since 2020, he has allegedly posed as a paralegal, attempting to secure payments from drug traffickers working with cocaine shipments from Colombia and the Dominican Republic.

It’s reported that Hernandez’s intended target was in the process of being extradited to the U.S. to answer criminal charges when the FBI intervened in the scheme. At one point, he was said to have contacted them while in their apartment.

Documents state he even went so far as to obtain proper certification as a paralegal to arrange secret meetings with incarcerated suspects, posing as their lawyer during unauthorized visits.

While dealing with criminals, Hernandez reportedly condemned both the FBI and the traffickers’ lawyers when they didn’t comply with his demands. He allegedly received pay-offs in various forms, including cash, vehicles, and real estate, totaling between $4 million and $6 million, according to the available evidence.

In one case, a trafficker offered her mother’s house as collateral, and Hernandez claimed that about 70% of the debt had been repaid. He told another suspect that they “should pay because there is no price for freedom,” illustrating the harsh realities of the situation.

Court records also indicate that Hernandez is currently under federal probation until May 2027 due to a previous involvement in a money laundering conspiracy.
