Former Delaware Republican Governor Mike Castle passes away at 86

Former Delaware Governor Mike Castle, a moderate Republican known for his support of a program for commemorative coins, has died at the age of 86. Delaware Republicans confirmed his passing in Greenville on Thursday, though further details weren’t disclosed.

Castle was notable in Delaware politics, having a successful career until his unexpected loss in the 2010 Senate primary, which occurred before Joe Biden became vice president. Throughout his 18 years in Congress, he established himself as a centrist leader, respected for being a fiscal conservative while also advocating for social issues. This meant he sometimes pushed against his party on topics like government spending, environmental policies, and abortion rights.

As Delaware’s sole member of the House from 1993 until 2011, Castle took a strong stance in favor of pay-as-you-go budgeting for both spending and tax cuts. He played a vital role in enhancing children’s nutrition programs and promoting educational reforms during his tenure. He is particularly remembered for implementing a quarterly commemorative coin program that featured coins representing each state, starting with Delaware. This earned him the nickname “coin councillor” from various coin grading services.

His work inspired a federal revenue boost through this coin distribution system, and he also worked on establishing programs to honor U.S. presidents and celebrate national parks through coinage.

Delaware GOP Chairman Jean Truono remarked about Castle, stating that he epitomized public service through his moderation and unwavering commitment to Delaware residents.

Before his governorship in 1985, Castle had a history as a state legislator and served as lieutenant governor. In tribute to him, Delaware Governor Matt Meyer has ordered that flags be flown at half-staff next week.

Meyer recalled that during Castle’s time as governor, he visited every school in Delaware, demonstrating warmth and dedication that left a lasting impression on students.
