Former Democrat Legislator Sentenced for Burglary Seen Working at Dunkin’ Donuts

Former Senator Found Working at Dunkin Donuts After Robbery Conviction

A former Democratic lawmaker ended up working at Dunkin Donuts after avoiding a lengthy prison term for a first-degree robbery charge. Nicole Mitchell, who previously served as a Minnesota Senator, received a 180-day job release following a 2024 incident where she broke into her stepmother Carol Mitchell’s home dressed in a black cat costume. On Tuesday, a Town Hall columnist shared an image of her manning the cash register at Dunkin Donuts.

Mitchell is required to serve about six months in jail but is allowed to leave daily for her job. Additionally, she must complete five years of supervised probation. Her original 21-month sentence will only take effect if she breaches the terms of her probation.

In April 2024, the Detroit Lakes Police were alerted about the break-in at her stepmother’s residence. Authorities found Mitchell in the basement, clad in all black, with a flashlight concealed in her socks.

During her trial in July, prosecutors presented body camera footage showing officers confronting her in the living room while she wore dark attire. The video recorded Carol Mitchell, dressed in a robe, speaking to her stepdaughter as police arrested her.

Mitchell reportedly told authorities, “I was trying to get some of my dad’s because you wouldn’t talk to me anymore.” Following her conviction, she announced her resignation, emphasizing the need to wrap up her legislative responsibilities before leaving office permanently.

In a statement, her lawyer mentioned that Senator Mitchell should finalize her legislative projects or pass them on to her successor before her resignation takes effect.
