Former Disney employee sentenced to 3 years for hacking menus to remove allergy information, add profanities

The judge sentenced a former Disney World employee to three years in prison after removing peanut allergy information, adding blasphemy and hacking into the park’s menu system to change the font.

According to Fox 35, Michael Schuer, 40, of Winter Garden, Florida, has served three years in federal prison and has to pay the victim $687,776.50.

Scheuer pleaded guilty to the January charges.

He worked as a menu production manager at Disney and was responsible for creating and distributing all restaurant menus, including digital menus, Fox 35 reports. He was fired on June 13, 2024.

Scheuer’s firing “is not considered controversial or friendly,” according to a federal complaint, Scheuer “made several menu changes that threaten public health and safety,” according to the outlet.

The complaint says Scheuer added a blasphemy and changed the pricing of some items on the menu. He also sent multiple login requests, allowing more than 12 employees to access their accounts and systems.

None of his changes were printed or digital versions of the menu, but the complaint stated that damages were over $150,000.

The FBI raided Schuer’s home on September 23, seizing at least four computers.

Scheuer initially denied any involvement or misconduct when questioned by the FBI, claiming that Disney was “intentioning to frame him because he was worried about him and the conditions he ended.”

Attorney David Haas, who represents Scheuer, said his client had obstacles that affected his employment at Disney, according to Fox 35.

“He had a medical event and as a result, he was stopped,” Haas said. “Then Disney failed to respond to his inquiry as to why he was stopped, and then his suspension was inexplicably changed to an end.”

“Disney refused to provide a response as to why he was fired and did not create accommodation for him,” Haas continued. “He then filed an EEOC complaint and I look forward to fiercely presenting aspects of the client’s story.”

Scheuer was originally charged with one count of intentionally causing the transmission of programs, information, code or commands to a protected computer, causing intentional damage without permission exceeding $5,000.
