Former Donald Trump attorney has Colorado law license suspended for attempting to overturn 2020 election results

Jenna Ellis, a former lawyer for former President Donald Trump, has agreed to be suspended from practicing law in Colorado for three years for her role in attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.

The Presiding Judge: settlement The hearing took place on Tuesday between Ellis and his Colorado lawyer.

Ellis pleaded guilty in October to one count of aiding and abetting false statements. She struck a plea deal with prosecutors in the Georgia 2020 election interference case, in which Trump and 17 others were charged with engaging in an illegal conspiracy to keep the former president in power.

She was the first Condemned She was fired by Colorado’s Office of Legal and Regulatory Counsel in March 2023 for “making false statements on national television and on Twitter about the 2020 Presidential election.”

Ellis’ suspension will take effect on July 2nd and will last for three years.

Two watchdog groups had called for her to be disbarred, but the settlement stated that while this was a “presumptive sanction” for her misconduct, her “criminal liability” lay in her role as an “accomplice” rather than a principal perpetrator.

“The evidence supporting her plea indicates that she aided and abetted the false statements at issue by attending Georgia Senate subcommittee meetings, but was not otherwise involved in drafting or preparing the false statements,” the settlement said.

“She has also expressed remorse, recognized the harm caused by her misconduct, and has taken significant and concrete steps to mitigate the harm caused by her misconduct,” the settlement said, noting that a three-year suspension would be an “appropriate sanction.”

Ellis will have to file a petition if he wants to be reinstated to practice law in Colorado.

In a letter dated May 22, Ellis expressed “deep remorse” and said he wanted to acknowledge the harm his misconduct caused.

“I am not doing this out of any political calculation, anger toward a former client, or because someone is trying to undermine or discredit my statements. My statements are simply me choosing to take responsibility for my actions and involvement in the damage caused to our country by the post-2020 election activities on behalf of then-President Donald Trump,” she wrote. “My involvement was a mistake.”

She said she gratefully accepts the resulting suspension and urged those who still believe the 2020 election was stolen to “consider changing their position.”

“I will continue to stand up for the truth, even if it means I have to admit I’m wrong,” Ellis concluded.
