Former ESPN host Samantha Ponder recently took to social media to share her feelings of discomfort after receiving a direct message regarding her sadness over the death of Charlie Kirk, a conservative influencer, last week.
Ponder also addressed safety worries related to riding the subway in New York City, particularly following a violent incident involving Irina Zalzka. In her post on X, she mentioned that the messages she receives have become increasingly intrusive while she continues to grieve the loss of the 31-year-old Kirk.
“My DMs are more intrusive than ever (and believe me, that says a lot). When someone is shot and shares opinions publicly, they need to align perfectly with our chosen beliefs,” she reflected. She questioned how it’s possible to express sorrow for someone without fully agreeing with their views.
Kirk was tragically killed during an event at Utah Valley University, and Tyler Robinson has been charged with his murder.
Ponder has been among the sports personalities expressing condolences for Kirk’s family. She remarked on the shift in the atmosphere, stating, “It feels different now, and honestly, it’s more frightening. But in light of what’s happening in our nation and its impact on our children, I feel even more compelled to speak the truth with love.”
Ponder also expressed her previous fear of being honest in her professional life, admitting, “I spent much of my career as a coward… afraid of speaking out because it might jeopardize my position. Now that I don’t have that concern, I realize how crucial it is to have courage. I’m mourning for our country.”
