Tim Green: A Journey Through Adversity
Tim Green, 61, is a man with an impressive background. Once a first-round NFL draft pick, he played eight seasons with the Atlanta Falcons. Besides his football career, he’s also made a name for himself as a broadcaster for “NFL on Fox,” an accomplished author—having penned around 40 books—and even a lawyer.
In 2018, Tim shared the news of his ALS diagnosis. Yet, interestingly, this hasn’t hindered his pursuits. He continues to expand his already remarkable resume.
Recently, Tim teamed up with his son, Troy, to launch a podcast titled “Nothing Has Been Said.” This platform enables Tim to communicate, despite losing his voice to the disease, through eye-tracking technology and AI-generated speech. In discussing the podcast, Tim described it as “one of the most meaningful things I’ve ever done.”
“Each conversation helps us raise awareness about ALS while also creating lasting memories,” he shared. He emphasized that it strengthens their bond and showcases the love, resilience, and humor present even in tough times. Troy brings energy and a fresh perspective to their discussions.
Initially, Tim wasn’t keen on starting a podcast. He thought the world didn’t need another one. “Troy was persistent, and I eventually agreed, but only if we could use it to honor my Christian faith and raise funds for ALS awareness,” he explained.
He further remarked, “It makes more sense to do this together, creating an authentic and hopeful space to share our candid conversations about life, football, and ALS.” Troy, one of Tim’s five children, expressed excitement about hearing family stories he’d never encountered before. “Dad is incredibly humble,” he noted. “If I accomplish half of what he’s done, I’d want everyone to know, but he keeps things low-key.” Troy often recalls insights from guests and finds joy in the process.
In one memorable podcast episode featuring former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman, Troy shared a story he’d never heard of before—reflecting on moments his father had kept to himself. These kinds of anecdotes create a deeper understanding between them.
Tim’s approach to podcasting isn’t without foundation. His experience as a writer and broadcaster has undoubtedly shaped how he connects with his audience. “As a writer, I learn to tell stories that truly resonate. It’s about more than just information; it’s about emotional connection,” he explained.
In addition to his podcast, Tim initiated Tuck Rules, a campaign aimed at raising money for ALS research in Massachusetts. The efforts have generated over $10 million to date. “Raising that amount for ALS research is incredibly humbling,” he said, noting that every contribution brings them closer to finding effective treatments. “Turning my diagnosis into action became a vital mission for me—providing purpose beyond the illness.” This initiative has fostered connections with a community that includes researchers and other families facing similar challenges.
Tim also reflects on how the spirit of advocates like former NFL player Steve Gleason has inspired him. Despite their struggles, statements such as “If Steve can manage, why can’t I?” resonate deeply. “The work done by the Gleason Foundation is invaluable,” Tim remarked, praising the support it offers to ALS patients.
Ultimately, Tim’s pride lies most tied to his family—a sentiment he often repeats. “My family is what I cherish the most,” he admitted. With a marriage of over 36 years and children pursuing diverse careers and lives, Tim anchors his achievements in their successes. “How lucky are they to have a role model like him?” Troy mused, highlighting their unique home environment filled with love and support.
