James Comey Charged with False Statements and Obstruction
Former FBI Director James Comey has publicly asserted his innocence in light of new charges brought against him. In a video posted on Instagram, he addressed the accusations, indicating that he and his family were aware of the risks involved in standing up to Donald Trump.
“We don’t kneel,” he stated, emphasizing his resolve. Comey reflected on a touching moment shared with his daughter, Mohren, who was dismissed from her role as a federal prosecutor in July, mentioning, “fear is a tool for tyrants.”
Comey now faces two charges: committing perjury and obstructing justice during his 2020 testimony before Congress. Interestingly, these charges surfaced just before a five-year statutory deadline for prosecution.
“I hope you’re not afraid,” he urged his audience. “I hope you’re engaged instead… You vote like your beloved country.”
Historically, Trump has expressed a desire for legal action against Comey related to his handling of investigations into the 2016 election and alleged Russian interference, which Trump has frequently criticized. Comey was dismissed by Trump in his first year in office.
“I have great confidence in the federal justice system,” Comey declared, also expressing sorrow for the state of the Department of Justice. “And I am innocent. So let’s take the trial and protect our faith.”
Earlier this year, Trump had labeled Comey a “dirty police officer.” In a somewhat cryptic message on social media, Comey posted a picture of a beach with shells arranged in a particular pattern and accompanied it with the caption about a “cool shell formation” he spotted on a walk.
The numbers in the shell arrangement—86 and 47—sparked conversations, as 86 often denotes removal or getting rid of something, while 47 references Trump’s status as the 47th president during his second term. This post was interpreted by some as a veiled threat, especially considering Trump had survived two assassination attempts last year. Subsequently, Comey deleted the post.
“I have carefully reviewed the government documents related to Comey’s indictment… A fair trial should result in a conviction,” tweeted Tom Fitton, citing a federal FOIA lawsuit revealing details about Comey’s alleged misconduct.
