The attendee who died at Donald Trump’s campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on Saturday has been identified as former fire chief Corey Comperatore, who was shot and killed while trying to protect his family from gunfire during Trump’s assassination attempt.
“Time stood still yesterday,” his daughter, Allison Comperatore, wrote in a now-deleted social media post. She called him a “real-life superhero” and said he “quickly threw” her and her mother to the ground and “shielded me from incoming bullets.”
“He loved his family. He loved us so much that he would have taken an actual bullet for us. We have lost a selfless and loving husband, father, brother, uncle, son and friend,” she added. “I will never stop thinking about him and mourning for him until the day I die. July 13 will forever be remembered as the day that changed my life. I will be a completely different person than I was not even 24 hours ago.”
Comperatore, 50, leaves behind a wife and two daughters, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro said.
“He loved his community and his family,” the governor said in a statement. “Cory was a staunch supporter of the former president and was so happy to be there with the community last night. Corey died a hero. Corey dove in last night to protect his family. Corey was the best of us.”
According to NBC: ConnecticutAt least two people were injured in the assassination attempt on President Trump at a rally on Saturday, which Pennsylvania State Police identified as David Duch, 57, of New Kensington, Pennsylvania, and James Copenhaver, 74, of Moon Township, Pennsylvania. As of Sunday, both were in stable condition.
The gunman, identified by the Secret Service as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, shot the former president from an elevated position, killing him. Trump, who was shot above his right ear, initially hid behind the podium where he was speaking. Secret Service members then rushed in and helped Trump to his feet. Trump, face covered in blood, then stood up and pumped his fist at cheering supporters before being escorted off the stage.
“My brother, Corey Comperatore, was killed at a Trump rally in Pennsylvania,” Dawn Comperatore Schafer wrote on Facebook Sunday morning.
She announced that her brother had turned 50, posting a picture of the family and her brother holding up balloons with the numbers 5 and 0 on their birthday. Independent I will report.
“Hatred towards one man took the life of the man we loved most. He was a hero protecting his daughters. His wife and daughters survived the unthinkable, the unimaginable,” she said. “Hate knows no bounds, love knows no bounds. Please pray for my sister-in-law, niece, my mother, my sister, me, and his niece and nephew. This feels like a terrible nightmare, but we know this is our painful reality.”
With President Trump’s blessing, Meredith O’Rourke, national finance director for the 2024 campaign, GoFundMe page for victims. As of mid-afternoon, the campaign had surpassed its $1 million goal and raised nearly $4 million.
