Former Giant Lorenzo Carter retires shortly after joining the Titans

The Titans’ edge rushing situation has changed dramatically with the retirement of veteran Lorenzo Carter, which was announced just a day before the team’s training camp. “He told us yesterday that he has decided to step away,” said Titans general manager Mike Borgonzi. “We genuinely wish him the best.”

For many, Carter will be remembered as a third-round pick by the Giants in the 2018 draft, specifically at the 66th overall spot. This 29-year-old player grew up in Georgia and was a standout high school recruit, opting to play college ball for the Georgia Bulldogs, where he excelled for four seasons.

During his college career, he participated in 54 games, registering 165 tackles, 21 tackles for loss, 14 sacks, and forcing seven fumbles. His senior year was particularly impressive, helping Georgia achieve a 13-2 record, alongside an SEC title and a Rose Bowl victory, during which he recorded his personal bests of 61 tackles and eight tackles for loss.

When he entered the NFL, many were excited about his impressive athleticism and potential. His rookie season saw him in 15 games, starting two, and accumulating 43 tackles and four sacks. Over his seven-year stint in the league, he maintained similar numbers.

Carter continued playing with the Giants for three more seasons, starting in 31 out of 34 games. His peak year in New York came in 2021, where he tallied 50 tackles, five sacks, and his first career interception.

After his time with the Giants, he signed a one-year, $3.5 million deal with the Falcons before the 2022 season, making a noticeable impact by starting all 17 games and achieving a career-high of 58 tackles. This performance earned him a new two-year, $9 million contract with Atlanta.

This offseason, Carter joined the Titans, participating in various offseason activities like OTAs and minicamps before opting for retirement earlier this week. Now, as Tennessee’s training camp begins, players like Arden Key, Doleman Jones, Femiora DeJo, Jalen Harrell, Alligay, Titus Leo, and Desmond Evans are set to move forward as the current edge rushers.
