Chris Canty Speaks Out on Giants’ Struggles
Chris Canty isn’t shy about addressing the criticism surrounding his performance over the past three years in football.
Brian Daboll, the former Giants defensive end, has found himself under scrutiny as the team faces a challenging 2-7 start this season, marking the third consecutive time they’ve stumbled out of the gate like this.
While there have been some strides, such as discovering a promising quarterback in Jackson Dart, Canty shared his thoughts on Friday during an appearance on Bart Scott’s ESPN New York radio show.
“You’ve hired and fired enough coordinators,” Canty pointed out, referring to Daboll’s decisions. “Look at it; you pushed Wink Martindale out. He was good, but things haven’t improved since then.”
“You can’t keep shifting blame and expect things to change. At some point, it’s on you,” he added.
Canty mentioned that before making any significant changes, the Giants should really consider if a new coach is the right way to go.
“The CEO, or president of the team, is really the starting quarterback,” he explained, recalling his four seasons with the Giants from 2009 to 2012.
Bart echoed this sentiment, digging deeper into the quarterback situation. “Do we want a new coach? What kind of system are we after? Sure, Daboll might not be the fit, but who’s next?”
To Canty, it feels like the Giants are looking for a solid but safe choice; he speculated they wouldn’t pursue flashy names like Lane Kiffin but rather someone like Mike McCarthy. “What you really want to avoid is having rookies learning the ropes all over again,” he noted.
Dart and Daboll have been candid about their tight bond this season, with Daboll expressing enthusiasm about Dart’s growth, especially after his strong showing during the team’s upset over the Eagles in Week 6.
However, since that notable victory, the Giants have fallen in three consecutive games, increasing pressure on Daboll. The team is set to face the Bears in Chicago on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
