Former GOP congresswoman and ‘trailblazer’ dies at 49

Former Republican Rep. Mia Love of Utah passed away Sunday at the age of 49 after battling cancer.

Love's family said in a statement that she had died in her home surrounded by her family. Ai was initially diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2022.

Love was the first generation American whose parents moved from Haiti to Brooklyn in the 1970s. She later planted her roots in Utah, embarking on a career in public services, and became the first Black Republican woman to be elected to Congress. Ai served in the House of Representatives from 2014 to 2018.
