Former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich, who has faced significant legal troubles in the past, called on voters to support Republican candidates, claiming that socialists have taken control of the Democratic Party. This statement came during an appearance on the “Cats Roundtable” radio show.
Blagojevich, known for his conviction related to the Senate seat left vacant by Barack Obama after the 2008 presidential election, expressed his grievances about the current state of the Democratic Party. He went so far as to say, “It’s not the Democratic Party anymore. It’s a socialist party.” His comments were part of a discussion about his new book, “Framed, F*cked, and Freed: A Governor’s Odyssey.”
He accused the Democratic Party of being overtaken by individuals who, in his view, have a disdain for America, specifically mentioning New York City’s mayor, Zohran Mamdani. Blagojevich emphasized that if people don’t want policies reminiscent of Mamdani’s governance, they should vote Republican to protect the country from further decline.
In 2020, former President Trump commuted his 14-year sentence for political corruption. Blagojevich also had some harsh words aimed at Obama, claiming the former president is aligned with socialism and directly contributed to his legal woes.
According to Blagojevich, it was an intermediary sent by Obama who first approached him to negotiate who would fill the vacant Senate seat, a move he later deemed criminal. He argued that had Obama not initiated that contact, his troubles wouldn’t have happened. “Obama should have stood up for the rule of law… but he didn’t,” Blagojevich said, reflecting on the disparity between their eight years in public life.
While Blagojevich seems to hold disdain for Obama’s actions, the former president has consistently denied any wrongdoing or discussion regarding the Senate seat during their interactions. In fact, Obama stated he had not discussed the matter with Blagojevich back in 2008.
In a now-infamous conversation captured by FBI wiretaps, Blagojevich was heard saying he wouldn’t give up the Senate appointment easily, describing it as something “golden.”
Interestingly, Blagojevich’s book portrays Trump in a more favorable light. He argues that Trump has benefited the working class through tax policies that impact wages and overtime. During the broadcast, the host even floated the idea of Blagojevich running for Chicago mayor, suggesting there might still be a political future for him.
