Former Iron Maiden singer Paul Mario Day passes away at 69

Paul Mario Day, Original Iron Maiden Vocalist, Dies at 69

Paul Mario Day, known for being the original singer of Iron Maiden, has sadly passed away at the age of 69. His family shared that he died peacefully in his home in Australia.

While the official cause of death hasn’t been confirmed, Day had been dealing with cancer over the past few years. He was a pivotal figure in the early heavy metal scene.

Day joined Iron Maiden in December 1975, recruited by bassist Steve Harris as their very first vocalist. However, his time with the band was short-lived, lasting just ten months. He left, citing a lack of energy and charisma.

Reflecting on his era with the band, he once said, “When I sang for Iron Maiden, it was just a new pub band, and no one really wanted to see or hear us.” That comment came from an interview in 2019, where he talked about the struggles of gaining an audience.

Iron Maiden’s first gig, which took place in May 1976, marked the beginning of a journey that would continue without him. Shortly after, Day was replaced by Dennis Wilcock, who, like Day, only lasted for a year.

Wilcock’s spot was eventually filled by Paul DiAnno, who would go on to record the band’s first two albums. Day later claimed he co-wrote “Strange World,” which appeared on Iron Maiden’s self-titled debut album released in 1980 but did not receive credit for it. “It hurts to think that my first song is on a successful album, and no one knows it was me,” he expressed in 2019.

Despite the unresolved feelings about that song, he mentioned that the drama around it had settled by then. After leaving Iron Maiden, Day formed another band in 1980 and released their debut album, “Warhead,” the next year.

Since the news of his passing, numerous former bandmates have shared heartfelt tributes on social media. One former member expressed their sorrow, stating, “We are deeply saddened to learn that great vocalist Paul Mario Day has passed away.” They acknowledged his significant contributions to the New Wave of British Heavy Metal and highlighted his performances.

Day’s legacy includes many memorable shows, particularly the 1981 Monsters of Rock Festival where he performed alongside legends like AC/DC and Whitesnake.

After his time with the band More, he led Wildfire from 1983 to 1984. His most notable period came in 1985 when he joined the reformed glam rock band Sweet. Guitarist Andy Scott recalled, “When Paul arrived at the audition, we didn’t look any further.” They needed a singer, and Day impressed them immediately.

In the 1980s, Day moved to Australia, where he lived until his passing. Scott offered his condolences, stating, “My deepest sympathies go out to his wife, Cecily, and my family and friends. It’s a sad day for all Sweet fans.” The rock community mourns the loss of a true talent.
