Former NFL Quarterback Browning Nagle Dies at 57

Browning Nagle, the former Jets quarterback, passed away this week after fighting colon cancer. He was just 57 years old.

Nagle first made a name for himself at Louisville, where he really shone during his two seasons as a starter under coach Howard Schnellenberger. I mean, he threw for over 4,600 yards and had 32 touchdowns—pretty impressive. In the 1991 Fiesta Bowl, he led the Cardinals to a remarkable win against Alabama, setting records with 451 passing yards and three touchdowns, earning MVP honors in the process.

His NFL journey began when he was drafted 34th overall in 1991, just ahead of Brett Favre, who would eventually become a Hall of Famer. Nagle’s debut NFL start came in 1992, where he managed to throw for 366 yards and two touchdowns in a losing effort against the Falcons. Honestly, the Jets were looking for their next Joe Namath, but the season was tough, and Nagle’s numbers just didn’t pan out like they hoped.

By 1994, he found himself released. During his time with the Jets, he racked up 2,361 passing yards, eight touchdowns, and 20 interceptions, completing only about 49.4% of his passes across 18 games.

After the Jets, Nagle joined the Colts in 1994, serving as a backup to Jim Harbaugh and Don Majkowski. He played one game that season, which sadly marked the end of his NFL career for a while. He resurfaced in 1996 with the Falcons, appearing in five games but not making a significant impact.

In a surprising twist, he returned to football in 1999, joining the Arena Football League with the Orlando Predators. There, he had a standout season, throwing 74 touchdown passes—kind of a nice comeback, right?

After stepping away from professional sports, Nagle returned to Louisville, shifted gears into medical sales, and built a family with his wife, Mary Jo.

In a statement, Louisville Football expressed their condolences: “We are saddened by the passing of Browning Nagle, former Fiesta Bowl MVP quarterback and Louisville great. His leadership on the field and passion for the game left a lasting mark on our program. Our thoughts are with his loved ones and teammates during this difficult time.”
