Former NFL Quarterback Browning Nagle Has Died at 57

Browning Nagle, a former NFL quarterback and notable player for Louisville during the 1991 Fiesta Bowl, has passed away at the age of 57, as reported by his old school on Friday. Earlier this year, he had been diagnosed with colon cancer.

Nagle began his professional career in 1991 when the New York Jets picked him in the second round of the draft. In his rookie year, he didn’t get much playing time, attempting just one pass. However, he took on the starting quarterback role in 1992.

While leading the Jets, Nagle concluded his starting tenure with a record of 3-10 and threw for seven touchdown passes.

In 1993, when Boomer Esiason, the 1988 NFL MVP, was traded to the Jets from the Cincinnati Bengals, Nagle was moved to a backup position. He then joined the Indianapolis Colts in 1994 before finishing his NFL journey with the Atlanta Falcons.

Nagle was often compared to Brett Favre, as the Jets were interested in drafting him during the 1991 NFL Draft. Unfortunately, after failing to trade up, they settled on Nagle while Favre was chosen by Atlanta with the pick right before theirs.

Prior to entering the NFL, Nagle made headlines by throwing for 451 yards and three touchdowns, helping Louisville achieve a dramatic victory over Alabama in the 1991 Fiesta Bowl. It’s such moments that linger in the memories of fans.

The Louisville football program expressed its sorrow about Nagle’s passing, stating, “We are saddened by the loss of former Fiesta Bowl MVP quarterback and Louisville great Browning Nagle. His leadership on the field and passion for the game left a lasting mark on our program. Our thoughts are with his loved ones and teammates during this difficult time.”

After his time in the NFL, Nagle also played in the Arena League and later transitioned into medical sales. He is remembered fondly, not just for his stats, but more so for his contributions and legacy in college football.
