Nick Mangold Announces Need for Kidney Transplant
Former New York Jets center Nick Mangold shared on social media that he is in urgent need of a kidney transplant.
He disclosed that he was diagnosed with a “genetic defect that causes chronic kidney disease” back in 2006, the same year he was drafted by the Jets as the 29th overall pick.
“I always knew this day might come, but I wish I had more time. Unfortunately, I don’t have any family members available to donate right now. That’s why I’m reaching out to everyone in the New York Jets and Ohio State communities for support. I’m specifically looking for a type O kidney donor,” the 41-year-old wrote.
Mangold expressed gratitude to those who have considered helping him: “I sincerely thank everyone who has thought about donating. Above all, I want to thank my family for being with me through this. This whole situation has really made me appreciate how lucky I am to have such amazing family, friends, and community around.”
He added, “It’s been a tough time, but I’m staying positive and focusing on what lies ahead. I can’t wait to get back to full health and see you all at MetLife Stadium & The Shoe again.”
Mangold spent 11 seasons with the Jets, making seven Pro Bowl appearances and earning two first-team All-Pro selections along with a second-team All-Pro nod. He was part of the Buckeyes team that won a national championship in 2002 and was inducted into the Jets’ Ring of Honor in 2022.
He participated in consecutive AFC Championship Games with the Jets in 2009 and 2010, achieving first-team All-Pro honors during that period.
