Laurie Kanter finally broke through.
The 34-year-old Kanter from Bath, England, won the Porsche European Open, marking his first victory on the DP World Tour.
Kanter broke away from a crowded leaderboard on the back nine, with four players tied for the lead after the turn, but while others faltered late on at Green Eagle Golf Course in Hamburg, Germany, Kanter remained consistent. He birdied the 11th, 15th and 16th holes (all par-5s) to take a three-stroke lead going into the final two holes.
He missed an 8-foot putt for par on the 17th hole to drop a stroke, but it didn’t matter: Canter finished at 13 under par to win by two strokes over Austria’s Bernd Wiesberger and South Africa’s Thriston Lawrence.
“I tried not to get caught up in the tournament. I tried to stay as factual as possible,” Kanter said. DP World Tour Broadcast rear.
“Today, unlike the previous 1,000 times, things went my way. Maybe now that I’ve made it, I’ll look back at the times when I didn’t make it, and it wasn’t because of what I was doing, but because of what other people were doing.”
It’s a career-defining moment for the Englishman, who has played all over the world since turning professional in 2011. He has competed on the Asian Tour, European Tour, LIV Golf and a number of mini tours.
But before Sunday, he had only one professional win, on the British mini-tour in 2015.
Still, Canter, who has previously ranked in the top 100 of the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) during his career, finally won after coming close on multiple occasions. His best result on the DP World Tour was a runner-up finish to Billy Horschel at the 2021 BMW PGA Championship.
Since then, Kanter decided to try out for LIV Golf but was unable to make the team and was eliminated from a LIV Golf promotional event last fall, missing out on the opportunity to compete on the Saudi Arabia-sponsored circuit in 2024.
This came just months after Kanter finished tied for 17th at the British Open at Royal Liverpool.
But now, 13 years later, he’s a DP World Tour champion.
