Brian Kelly’s Legal Threat Over $54 Million Buyout
Brian Kelly has threatened to take legal action against LSU amid a dispute regarding a $54 million buyout following his termination as head football coach.
LSU let Kelly go last October after a disappointing season, but now he contests the terms of the buyout. Kelly is set to receive the full $54 million, but there’s contention about this. LSU’s athletic director, Scott Woodward, who was also dismissed, initially suggested a lower settlement. Kelly has rejected those offers, which were for $25 million and $30 million.
In a letter sent last Wednesday, Kelly’s legal team requested written confirmation from LSU Athletic Director Virge Ausberry and Board of Supervisors member John Carmouche regarding the school’s commitment to fulfill the buyout agreement. Kelly was fired during his fourth year of a ten-year, $95 million contract.
The letter warned that without this confirmation, Kelly would pursue all available legal remedies. In his earlier seasons, LSU had a record of 10-4, 10-3, and 9-4 but failed to secure a championship title. Upon Kelly’s firing, Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry criticized Scott Woodward, stating he wouldn’t be responsible for hiring a new head coach, humorously claiming he’d prefer Donald Trump for the role over Woodward.
Landry expressed concerns about repeating past mistakes with contracts that resulted in large financial losses for LSU, emphasizing a need for caution moving forward. It’s clear that the situation is becoming increasingly contentious, with Kelly firmly standing his ground on the buyout. The outcome remains uncertain, and it highlights the often tumultuous nature of college football contracts.
