Former Mayor Stabbed Outside Dispensary
A former Democratic mayor from Massachusetts was stabbed outside his own marijuana dispensary, according to local authorities.
Will Flanagan, aged 45, served as the mayor of Fall River from 2010 to 2014. He is currently facing a recall election after being accused of brandishing a firearm towards a political opponent, Jasiel Correia. The incident occurred around 5 p.m. on Monday in front of the Cosmopolitan Pharmacy, which Flanagan owns, as reported by the Fall River Police Department.
Officials stated that Flanagan sustained “serious injuries” and was taken to the hospital, where he remains in stable yet serious condition.
On Tuesday afternoon, Fall River Police announced the arrest of 31-year-old Cory Gonzalez in connection with the stabbing.
Fall River’s current Mayor, Paul Coogan, expressed his support for Flanagan on social media. “My thoughts and prayers are with former Mayor Will Flanagan, his family, and friends. The Mayor’s Office fully backs the Fall River Police Department in their efforts to bring justice to this situation,” Coogan said.
Police Chief Kelly Furtado described the attack as a “senseless act of violence” and noted that officers responded quickly to the scene. “We will utilize every resource available to ensure justice is served,” she added, thanking the Mayor’s Office for its ongoing support as the investigation continues.
Coogan mentioned that the suspect has a history of mental health issues. “My concern isn’t primarily about his past arrests but rather his mental well-being and reintegration into society,” he stated.
Flanagan, who has also been practicing law, recently ventured into local film, having filmed a video shortly before the stabbing where he was seen singing to the tune of “Blame It on the Rain” during a storm. It’s a curious turn of events, one that leaves many questioning the circumstances leading to such a violent confrontation.
