Michigan Wolverines Coach Fired Amid Allegations
The head football coach for the Michigan Wolverines, Sherone Moore, was let go on Wednesday after being accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. He is currently in police custody as authorities investigate an assault that allegedly happened shortly after his dismissal.
Moore, who is 39 years old, was taken into custody at 8:30 p.m. on December 10 and booked at the Washtenaw County Jail. Details about specific charges against him have not yet been disclosed.
Police from Pittsfield Township, which serves the area close to the University of Michigan, were called to investigate an alleged assault around 4:10 p.m. Officers later confirmed they had a suspect but withheld his identity.
A statement from Pittsfield County Police indicated that this incident doesn’t seem to be random and reassured the community that there is no ongoing threat. The suspect remains detained while the Washtenaw County Prosecutor reviews the charges, and the investigation is still active.
The report of the assault came just half an hour before Michigan athletic director Ward Manuel announced Moore’s termination.
“Sherone Moore has been terminated for cause, effective immediately,” Manuel’s statement read. He noted that the University’s investigation had found credible evidence of Moore’s inappropriate conduct, which violates University policy.
Moore joined the Michigan coaching staff in 2018 as the tight ends coach and became the associate offensive coordinator in 2021. In 2023, he was named the full-time offensive coordinator, during a challenging period for the program due to a sign-stealing scandal. Notably, he took over as head coach while Jim Harbaugh faced a three-game suspension linked to the scandal.
In his inaugural season as head coach, Moore led the Wolverines to an 8-5 record, culminating in an impressive victory over Ohio State and a bowl win against Alabama.
The Wolverines finished his first full year at 9-3, although he received a two-game suspension in 2025 for his involvement in the ongoing scandal.
Moore had three years remaining on a five-year contract worth $14 million. However, the University will not be responsible for any part of his buyout due to the nature of his firing.
Biff Poggi will step in as the interim head coach for the University of Michigan.
