Former Michigan Teacher Charged with Having Sexual Relationship with 16-Year-Old Boy

Former Teacher Accused of Sexual Relations with Student

A former educator from Pontiac, Michigan, has been charged with engaging in sexual relations with a 16-year-old student in 2023 and could face up to 15 years in prison.

The individual at the center of the allegations is 26-year-old Jocelyn Saint-Roman, who previously taught at Oakside Prep Academy. This information was reported on Wednesday.

According to reports, another teacher alerted authorities after suspecting that Saint-Roman was involved with the student.

Oakland County Prosecutor Karen D. McDonald stated that her office has filed charges related to the alleged relationship, which includes multiple counts of criminal sexual conduct.

McDonald commented, “This defendant is accused of using his position of authority to exploit minor victims. These allegations represent the ultimate violation of trust placed on educators by parents and the community. I encourage other teachers to report any similar concerns to prevent further exploitation.”

She also emphasized that while a 16-year-old can legally consent, the dynamic in this case complicates that notion due to the teacher-student relationship. McDonald insisted that schools should be safe spaces for young people.

According to the Michigan Defense website, the legal age for consensual sex is 16, but individuals under 15 cannot consent. Those engaged in sexual activities with minors in this age bracket may be prosecuted under the Michigan Criminal Sexual Conduct Act. Furthermore, the law indicates that the age of consent is raised to 18 when the adult holds a position of authority, such as a teacher.

School officials have stated that they responded quickly when informed of the situation. A spokesperson for the school said, “We strive to provide a safe and supportive learning environment for the students entrusted to our care. Their safety and well-being remain our top priority.”
