Former Minnesota politician Nicole Mitchell avoids significant prison time after breaking into her stepmother's house.

A Minnesota senator was seen moving around her stepmother’s bedroom, dressed entirely in black, after avoiding a lengthy prison term linked to a robbery incident.

Democrat Nicole Mitchell, who stepped down from her state senate position amid scandal, faced a potential 20-year sentence for first-degree robbery.

However, the former Air National Guard leader was instead sentenced to 180 days of work release, meaning she can leave prison each day, as reported by KSTP.

Mitchell acknowledged her consequences during her court appearance, stating she felt remorseful. “I ruined everything,” she expressed, demonstrating little emotion throughout the sentencing.

“I deserve to be here today… I did something wrong and I’ll strive to become a better person,” she added.

In April 2024, Mitchell had entered her stepmother’s home in Detroit Lakes, located about 220 miles northwest of the Twin Cities, under the guise of collecting her deceased father’s ashes. While at the home, a video captured her creeping around, dressed in black with a hat.

Initially, she claimed to be checking on her stepchild, but ultimately admitted during the trial that her presence was not appropriate.

Following her conviction in July for first-degree robbery and possessing burglary tools, she resigned her position on July 25, 2025, just a week later.

As part of her sentence, Mitchell is also required to complete five years of supervised probation, risking a 21-month prison term if she doesn’t comply, according to reports.

She was elected in 2022 to represent the 47th district, encompassing parts of the suburbs around Woodbury and Maplewood. Her seat will remain unfilled until a special election set for November 4th.
