Former MLB Pitcher Convicted of Murder

Dan Serafini, a former Major League Baseball pitcher, was found guilty of first-degree murder for killing his father-in-law and for the attempted murder of his stepmother, stemming from a financial dispute. The conviction occurred on Monday.

At 51 years old, Serafini, who played professionally from 1996 to 2007, shot 70-year-old Robert Gary Spoore in 2021. He also faced charges of first-degree robbery. Reports indicate that he waited in his in-laws’ home in Homewood, California, with a .22 caliber gun for three hours before attacking the couple. This incident unfolded just hours before a 911 call was made.

A toddler and a baby were reportedly in the home at the time of the attack. While Spoore’s wife, Wendywood, survived her injuries, she tragically took her own life in 2023, with her family suggesting that the trauma from that night contributed to her death.

Prosecutors revealed that the motivations behind this chilling crime were linked to a $1.3 million disagreement over a ranch renovation project involving an elderly couple who had been investors. Evidently, Serafini had earlier expressed violent intentions, reportedly saying, “I’m going to kill them one day,” and “I’ll come after you.”

Interestingly, Serafini had received $90,000 from his in-laws on the day when the attack occurred. Adrienne Spohr, the daughter of the victims, characterized the crime as “heinous and calculated,” noting her parents’ generosity towards Serafini and his wife, Erin. She spoke emotionally about the years of suffering following the attack, stating, “At the end, justice was given today.” Her focus now is on ensuring Serafini remains imprisoned.

Another individual, Samantha Scott, 33, has been implicated as well. She reportedly pleaded guilty to accessory charges earlier this year and is said to have a close relationship with Serafini. The couple was arrested in October 2023 in separate locations.

Authorities expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the case, highlighting the dedicated efforts of detectives to bring justice for the tragic events of 2021. Serafini is currently held without bail, awaiting a ruling on August 18.

Serafini’s career in baseball began when he was drafted by the Twins in 1992. Over the span of his six-season career, he played with several teams, posting a 15-16 record and a 6.04 ERA. His career was marred by legal troubles and suspensions, including a 50-game suspension for performance-enhancing drugs.

In an interview, he indicated significant financial losses due to poor investments and divorce settlements, claiming a loss of $14 million.
