Reyes Moronta, who played as a pitcher for the Los Angeles Angels last year, died in a motorcycle accident in the Dominican Republic, one of his former teams announced on Monday. He was 31 years old.
Dominican Republic baseball club Águilas Cibaenas released a statement on Moronta’s death.

“We are deeply saddened by the unexpected passing of pitcher Reyes Moronta, who passed away yesterday,” the team said in a statement.
“The Águilas board, baseball operations and players share the pain of his family and pray for his eternal rest.”
Moronta, who was riding a motorcycle in the Villa Gonzalez neighborhood at the time of the accident, had been released by Mexican League club Bravos de Leon last week.

Moronta made his debut with the San Francisco Giants in 2017 and played in most games over the next two seasons, posting a 2.49 ERA in 69 games in 2018 and a 2.86 ERA in 56 games in 2019.
He signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers for 2022, then the Arizona Diamondbacks acquired him off waivers from the Dodgers later in the season. He signed with the Angels in May 2023, then was waived after the season.
He played in 177 games over six years in the major leagues and posted a 3.05 ERA.
“The San Francisco Giants are deeply saddened by the news of the passing of former relief pitcher Reyes Moronta, who passed away yesterday in the Dominican Republic,” the Giants said in a statement.
