The former proprietor of Modell’s Sporting Goods has pulled the plug on his website, which was designed to sell Knicks-themed merchandise, just one week after its launch. This decision follows a cease-and-desist letter from the current owner of Modell’s, according to reports.
Mitchell Modell created the site shortly after the Knicks won their historic NBA championship but announced its closure to the media.
Following the shutdown, Modell quickly launched a new e-commerce platform, mitchellmodells.com, selling not only Knicks merchandise but also items like yarn that celebrate U.S. soccer and Philadelphia.
“I threw in the towel,” Modell reflected on his short-lived venture into sports retail.
The cease-and-desist letter, which was reviewed by the media, came from Raj Gupta, the current owner of Modell’s, who requested that Modell refrain from using the brand’s name in future endeavors.
Gupta’s company, Omni Retail Enterprises, which purchased Modell’s in 2023, accused Modell of “trademark infringement” and “unfair competition,” claiming he breached a non-disclosure agreement.
This situation unfolded after a contentious text exchange between Gupta and Modell.
Modell, whose great-grandfather Morris founded the company in 1889, initially attempted to reclaim the brand from Gupta in 2024, but discussions fell through. Modell’s filed for bankruptcy in 2020, resulting in the closure of 140 stores, and now operates solely as an e-commerce entity.
Attempts to reacquire the brand continued last year when Gupta initially entertained a $1 million offer from Modell, which included a stake in a new business initiative.
However, those talks stalled in June, coinciding with the Knicks’ push for the NBA title.
Gupta recently remarked that Modell had not adhered to their agreed terms.
Modell’s new online store offers $25 T-shirts, including a “Go USA” design celebrating the FIFA World Cup, with a portion of sales donated to cancer research.
“We’re working on it. Quickly,” the website claims, mentioning the excitement surrounding major events like the NBA championship and the World Cup.
Gupta opted not to comment on the recent issues.
