Former Moody’s executive admits he didn’t file taxes on $54M in income – NJ.com

A Morris County resident and former Moody’s senior vice president and in-house general counsel pleaded guilty Thursday to failing to file personal income taxes for four years, U.S. Attorney Philip R. Selinger announced Friday.

John Goggins, 63, of Chatham, pleaded guilty to failing to file personal tax returns from 2018 to 2021. During this period, Goggins had gross income of $54 million, authorities said.

“Mr. Goggins deeply regrets his failure to file certain personal income tax returns and accepts full responsibility,” a spokesperson for Mr. Goggins said Friday afternoon. “This is a personal matter and has nothing to do with his work. Mr. Goggins has paid unpaid taxes, interest and fines related to the misdemeanor and looks forward to putting an end to this situation.” He has worked with tax professionals to ensure full compliance with his tax obligations.”

According to court documents, Goggins failed to pay taxes on income exceeding $10 million in 2018, $11.24 million in 2019, $21.1 million in 2020, and $12.25 million in 2021.

Mr. Goggins resigned from his position at Moody’s in September 2023 and is no longer affiliated with Moody’s.

“This is a personal matter for Mr. Goggins and concerns his personal tax obligations and has nothing to do with his work at Moody’s,” a company spokesperson said Friday.

Sentencing for Goggins is scheduled for September 6, 2024.
