NIL Deals Stirring Up Chaos in College Sports

With the rise of name, image, and likeness (NIL) agreements in college athletics, player and coach movements have become increasingly chaotic.

Ben Dogra, a former NFL agent, mentioned that there are whispers of Congressional intervention, primarily because the NCAA appears to be falling short in its duties, leaving universities struggling to manage things effectively. He expressed, “I think less government involvement is better. We shouldn’t involve the government unless absolutely necessary. But at this point, it seems the NCAA isn’t fulfilling its role, and these universities can’t effectively self-govern.”

Dogra also noted a recent shift regarding Washington quarterback Damond Williams Jr., whose $4 million contract sent shockwaves throughout the program. He reversed his earlier decision to transfer following the unexpected news.

“Penalizing players for transferring won’t be easy; it’s part of the business,” he commented. “You have to remember, coaches do the same thing. It’s fascinating that a quarterback at Washington would consider a $6 million offer elsewhere, risking a substantial payday.” He shared thoughts on the head coach, Jed Fisch, who seems frustrated about possibly losing Williams, even while Fisch himself is contemplating other opportunities.

Dogra elaborated, “The head coach isn’t thrilled about the situation, but he’s the same coach who had his eye on jobs in Florida and Michigan. There’s a double standard here. Do you really want a player back in the locker room who’s felt pressured to stay because of empty threats?” He raised valid concerns about maintaining team morale when the same rules don’t apply for coaches has compounded the problem.

He continued to ponder the enforcement of contracts across state lines, indicating that without a uniform approach, the prospect of Congressional involvement might become more serious. He referenced the recent conflict involving Clemson coach Dabo Swinney, who accused Ole Miss coach Pete Golding of trying to lure players away—something that’s left many in the industry likening NIL to the Wild West.

Dogra’s career has seen him representing notable athletes like Adrian Peterson and Richard Sherman, and he pointed out the unique challenges that come with the current landscape of college sports.
