JaMarcus Russell, who played three years in the NFL, was removed from his high school coaching staff in Alabama after he was accused of misappropriating funds.
Russell was a volunteer assistant coach at his alma mater, Williamson High School in Mobile, and the lawsuit alleges he received a $74,000 check designated as a donation to the school.
A Mobile County Public Schools spokesman confirmed that the former top pick in the 2007 NFL Draft has been “released from his volunteer coaching duties” in 2023.

“JaMarcus Russell was relieved of his volunteer coaching duties at Williamson High School last fall,” school officials said. WKRG Sports.
The owner of a local construction company said Russell told him the donation would help the football team purchase equipment for the weight room.

The former NFL quarterback is accused of depositing the checks into the credit union and then withdrawing an estimated $55,000, according to the complaint. Navigator Credit Union is now suing Russell for $55,000 in damages.

Mobile County Public Schools officials noted that Russell is also banned from the high school’s campus, but he appears to have violated that rule recently when he attended a football team event.
“Earlier this week, Mr. Russell was reiterated that he is no longer permitted to be involved with the football program or on school property,” the school district said in a statement to WKRG.

Russell rose to fame during his time at Louisiana State University, where he finished his collegiate football career with 6,625 passing yards and 52 touchdowns.
But his NFL tenure was widely viewed as a disappointment: He was the Raiders’ starting quarterback in 25 games over three years, finishing with 18 touchdowns and 23 interceptions.
