Former NFL quarterback challenges Giants' choice to let go of Brian Daboll

Orlovsky’s Take on Giants’ Decision to Fire Daboll

Dan Orlovsky, a former NFL quarterback, expressed his belief on Monday that the New York Giants should have granted head coach Brian Daboll another year, especially considering his developing relationship with quarterback Jackson Dart.

The Giants made the decision to part ways with Daboll after a particularly tough loss against the Chicago Bears, where they fell behind in the fourth quarter. On ESPN, Orlovsky mentioned that the team could have capitalized on their early momentum under Daboll.

“In my view, this was a mistake by the Giants,” Orlovsky stated. “There was a clear connection between the quarterback and the head coach. There were glimpses of production and a shared sense of hope.” He further remarked on the team’s struggles in the fourth quarter, noting, “They lost key players, and despite that, they showed they could build leads. I think that counts for something.”

He added that numerous defenses, which are heavily funded and packed with early draft picks, still struggled to hold their leads despite the Giants’ setbacks. “It’s easy to criticize Daboll, but let’s not forget: a lot of high-priced defensive talent hasn’t been able to get the job done either,” he pointed out.

Currently, the Giants’ defense has room for improvement, ranking 27th in points allowed and 29th in yards allowed. They are on a five-game losing streak, with a sizable deficit in fourth-quarter scoring, having lost 75-37. Brian Burns has performed well, leading the league with 11 sacks, but the secondary has struggled significantly.

In light of the situation, the Giants have appointed offensive coordinator Mike Kafka as the interim head coach.

In a joint statement, team president John Mara and chairman Steve Tisch acknowledged, “We evaluated the direction of the franchise and deemed it necessary to change the head coaching position at this time. The previous seasons have been disappointing, and we recognize our fans’ frustrations. We aim to improve significantly.”

They concluded by thanking Coach Daboll for his contributions and wishing him and his family well in the future.
