Former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant has hired attorney Levi McCathern after receiving a misdemeanor citation over a parking lot confrontation in October.

Bryant was cited for assault by contact, a Class C misdemeanor in Texas. A Southlake Municipal Court official confirmed that McCathern’s firm is representing him.

The dispute reportedly began after Bryant accused two men of driving recklessly. He said one of them threatened to shoot him, though Bryant later acknowledged that the man did not have a gun and was recording him on a phone.

“He started threatening me and basically insinuating that he’d shoot me or something,” Bryant said. He added that he told the man to move the phone away, then knocked it out of his hand.

McCathern is also representing Los Angeles Rams player Puka Nacua in a civil case involving an allegation that Nacua bit someone.

Southlake police said officers were called to a retail parking lot on October 25 at about 12:59 p.m. after reports of a fight involving several people and a possible weapon. Officers drew their firearms as a precaution and temporarily detained several individuals. Police said they found no firearms at the scene.

According to police, the argument began after a traffic incident near Kimball Avenue. The two parties drove into the parking lot, where the confrontation continued. After investigating, officers issued Bryant a citation for assault by contact and released him at the scene.
