FCC Approves Nomination for Young Republican Leader
In Washington, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has approved the appointment of Gavin Wax, a former leader of a New York Republican group, to fill a vacancy. This decision came from resigning FCC members on Saturday.
Commissioner Nathan Symington spoke in a phone interview, describing the 31-year-old Wax as a “great” choice and mentioning he had heard rumors about a potential nomination by President Trump.
However, Symington was careful not to jump ahead, saying, “I don’t want to go ahead of the president.” Symington has been with the FCC since his confirmation as Trump’s pick in December 2020.
Before joining the FCC, Symington worked as an associate at a law firm like Mayer Brown and held a senior advisory position at the National Telecommunications and Information Administration. After his term ended last year, he stepped away for a few months before returning.
As it stands, Wax is currently serving as the FCC Chief of Staff and Senior Advisor to Republican appointees. If confirmed, Wax would make history as the youngest FCC commissioner since Democrat Charles Denny, who was confirmed at age 32 back in 1945.
Symington mentioned his background in international trade related to wireless finance, indicating his role has involved a lot of reading on telecom regulations. “Gavin spent a lot of effort with me through the questions about 5G industrialization… I hope he will focus on achieving smart manufacturing in the U.S.,” he added.
Additionally, two authors collaborated with Symington last month, addressing the need to move away from “outdated practices” at the FCC. They are advocating for “Doge-Style” reforms that would benefit consumers, broadcasters, and taxpayers alike.
The FCC, established by the Communications Act of 1934, comprises five members and regulates various sectors including television, radio, internet, satellite, and cable. It also oversees the spectrum’s use for services such as 5G and manages auctions.
When reflecting on his role as chairman of the young Republicans, Symington highlighted the group’s size of 1,600 members. He noted the impressive events Wax has organized, stating how challenging they were to manage.
Wax has hosted the group’s annual holiday gala for several years, with Trump as the keynote speaker at the 2023 event.
At present, the FCC is composed of two Republican commissioners, including Symington, and two from the Democratic party. Recently, Democrat commissioner Jeffrey Starks announced his departure, which has created another vacancy.
Prior to this, Olivia Trusty was appointed as the third Republican to the Commissioner’s Committee and has received Senate confirmation.
Since Trump’s return to the White House, Republican Chairman Brendan Kerr has initiated several reforms at the agency, focusing on diversity practices within Verizon and discussing adjustments to “Section 230” protections for major tech companies.
This topic has sparked intense debate among Republicans regarding accountability for content on tech platforms.
Neither the White House nor Wax returned requests for comments immediately.
