Adams Introduces NYC Token to Combat Anti-Semitism

Eric Adams is back on the scene after his short break from being mayor. On Monday, he revealed the “NYC Token,” a cryptocurrency he believes will help in the fight against anti-Semitism.

This announcement came in the bustling Times Square, where a handful of reporters gathered to catch his first public remarks since stepping down just two weeks prior. “One of the key goals with this New York City coin is to generate revenue that can help combat both anti-Americanism and anti-Semitism. We want to educate kids on blockchain technology to effectively manage cities,” Adams stated.

He elaborated, mentioning that with the NYC Token, funds would be directed towards a nonprofit focused on organizations tackling anti-Semitism, though specifics remain unspecified. There’s also a nod to Historically Black Colleges and Universities being part of his vision, which he hopes will reach college campuses to inform young people about current national issues.

Adams has always had an affinity for cryptocurrencies, famously opting to receive his first paychecks in crypto. He has established a connection with Bitcoin mogul Brock Pierce, which adds an interesting layer to his crypto endeavors.

While he noted that the NYC Token could mean enhanced city operations, perhaps drawing inspiration from Walmart’s use of blockchain for supply chain management, some details about how it will function are still a bit fuzzy. “We know that cities can benefit from better transparency and operations. With this token, we’re investing in improving safety in our city,” he added.

Interestingly, he mentioned that, at least for now, he won’t be taking any salary from this venture. “I’m not getting paid at this point. If that changes, you’ll know,” he reassured attendees.

Adams has spent his post-mayoral days traveling, particularly enjoying Dubai and Congo, hinting at plans to enhance the city’s global engagement. When asked about his approach, the current mayor, Zoran Mamdani, seemed less than enthusiastic about Adams’ crypto initiative, offering a simple yet amused, “No,” when queried if he’d invest in those tokens.
