Former NYPD officer criticizes Chicago police robbery suggestions as 'shameful'

Concerns Over Chicago’s Crime Response

Following a surge in violent robberies in Chicago, a former NYPD officer criticized the police department’s recommendations for potential victims. This backlash came after officials shared safety tips in light of the eight robberies that occurred recently in areas like Grant Park and the Loop.

According to a memo from the Chicago police, the robberies involved suspects targeting unsuspecting individuals. Victims were typically assaulted for their belongings, and a gold chain was noted as a common item taken during these incidents.

In the wake of these events, Chicago police advised residents to avoid pursuing suspects, especially those who were seen moving in pairs and evading capture. They urged victims to remain calm during the theft, take note of the attackers’ identifying features, and talk with witnesses afterward to assist in police reports.

Former NYPD officer Carl DeFazio found the police guidelines troubling, stating, “It makes me a little sick just to see that.” He feels that these recommendations do not adequately address the real dangers faced by citizens. DeFazio, a veteran with a history in security, emphasized that such advice seems outdated and overly simplistic.

He suggested that, instead of calm observation, the most important message law enforcement should convey is about survival. “When you’re faced with a threat, it’s no time to be passive,” he remarked. DeFazio expressed concerns that even attempting to identify a criminal might provoke further violence against victims. His main point was clear: complying with demands in those tense situations is crucial.

Moreover, he argued that crime prevention should take priority over mere reactionary measures. DeFazio criticized the approach of the Chicago police for being too focused on responding to crime rather than working to prevent it. He advocated for community patrols to identify high-risk areas, reminiscent of past policing strategies.

In his perspective, making oneself appear non-threatening during a robbery is vital. He reiterated that if confronted by an armed assailant, the best course of action is to remain still and follow instructions without sudden movements. “That’s what they should really be telling people,” he concluded.

As of now, the Chicago police have not commented on the matter. The growing concerns in the community highlight a need for more effective strategies to deal with rising crime.
