A former Washington state trooper charged with killing his ex-wife and 17-year-old girlfriend and kidnapping the 1-year-old son he shared with his girlfriend was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Oregon State Police discovered the injured body of Elias Huizar, 39, after a police pursuit near Eugene on Tuesday around 3 p.m. A 1-year-old baby who was with her was safely taken into custody by Oregon State Police.
Oregon State Police Lt. Kyle Kennedy said at a news conference Tuesday evening that he spotted the former Yakima police officer driving southbound on Interstate 5 and began a pursuit. Huizar said he fled after officers tried to stop his vehicle.

Kennedy said officers pursued Huizar’s car at high speed and briefly exchanged gunfire. The approximately 40-mile pursuit ended when Huizar’s vehicle struck a commercial vehicle that was stopped on the interstate in an unrelated crash.
Kennedy said Huizar’s car spun in the median and when officers tried to make contact with him, Huizar shot himself and died at the scene.
Huizar shot and killed his ex-wife, Amber Marie Rodriguez, outside William Wiley Elementary School in West Richland around 3:30 p.m. local time on Monday, then shot Rodriguez eight times in front of their 9-year-old sons. He was charged with murder. witnesses told police. Rodriguez had recently obtained a protection order against Huizal.
When police searched Huizar’s home on South Highlands Boulevard later that day, they reportedly found the deceased teenage girlfriend. Apple Valley News reported.

Late Monday, the Washington State Patrol issued an Amber Alert for the suspect’s 1-year-old son, Roman Huizar, who he reportedly shared with his underage girlfriend. Police said Huizar was traveling to Mexico with a 1-year-old boy in a silver 2009 Toyota Corolla with license plate number CBZ4745.
“We spent all day trying to figure out how to get this boy out, and we’re grateful for the outcome,” President Kennedy said.

One of Rodriguez’s friends described her as “kind and gentle” in a Facebook post Monday.
The couple divorced in 2020, and Rodriguez applied for a protection officer after Huizar was accused of raping a teenage girl in February, the Tri-City Herald reported.
Huizar allegedly sexually assaulted the unconscious boy after the victim and Huizar’s teenage girlfriend had been drinking. Police arrested a 39-year-old police officer after his girlfriend allegedly caught him assaulting his friend, Tri-City News reported.

Investigators were working to determine whether Huizar’s girlfriend was of legal age when she conceived the child, the report said.
The former police officer posted $200,000 bail after his arrest, but the rape case was still pending when his wife and girlfriend were killed on Monday.
At least until earlier this year, Huizar was living with a 17-year-old girl he met when she was 11 and a resource officer at a middle school in Yakima, according to court records.
Mr. Rodriguez impregnated her when she was 15 years old, and the baby recently turned 1 year old, Mr. Rodriguez wrote in seeking an order of protection against Huizar.
The Yakima Police Department said in a Facebook post Tuesday that Huizar retired from the department in 2021 “after receiving disciplinary action.” No other information was provided.
The Richland School District announced it had terminated Huizar’s employment following his arrest in February. He announced that he received a recommendation from the Yakima School District and passed a background check before hiring him in 2022.
“We deeply regret that information regarding Mr. Huizar’s past was not disclosed through the various processes we have in place to vet RSD candidates for employment,” the district said in a statement. “Individuals applying for RSD employment are expected to be open and honest in their applications.”
